Have you ever wondered who came up with the concept of food delivery? We may not be able to specify who actually invented restaurant and fast food delivery, but we can tell you the legend surrounding the first pizza delivery in history.
It all started with Queen Margherita, the consort of King Umberto I of Italy. And before you ask, yes, she is the namesake of the well-known pizza flavor.
Here is the legend behind the earliest known pizza delivery.
Taking Trips Across a Newly Unified Italy
Princess Margherita of Savoy married her first cousin Umberto, Prince of Piedmont, on April 21, 1868. When he ascended to the newly-unified Italian throne on January 9, 1871, she became the first queen of a united Italy.
They were in a crucial situation — the nation’s unification and the couple’s reign were both fairly new — so the king and queen decided to take trips across the land to boost morale and gain the support of citizens.
Demanding a Meal Fit for a Commoner
At some point during the royal couple’s trip to Naples in 1889, Queen Margherita supposedly grew tired of having fancy, French-inspired meals. The strong-headed queen then demanded Raffaele Esposito, a famous local pizza maker, to prepare her a meal fit for commoners.
Esposito prepared three kinds of pizza for the Queen, one of which had green basil, white mozzarella, and red tomatoes — the colors of the new Italian flag. He hand-delivered them to her straight after they came out of the oven, and she loved the local Napolitano food at first bite.
From the oven straight to the Queen’s chambers, that is the story of the first ever recorded pizza delivery in history.
